Tuesday September 22, 2015

We began the morning with an 18 minute successful Read to Self time!  Students are doing such a great job focusing on their books for the whole time.  We have been making a habit of following up with a Check For Understanding with a partner where we share about what we just read.  We describe WHO was in the story, WHERE it TOOK place and WHAT happened.  By doing this, students confirm that they understood what they were reading as well as learning about other good books being read by their peers!  This is an excellent strategy to practice after home reading sessions with your child!

Next, we introduced a number of Word Work games and activities.  Students were then offered the opportunity to try them out.  These games will become a part of our weekly work work in addition to individual and small group instruction and practice.
Students, please tell your parents about the activity you chose today!

We spent a bit of time today working on our handwriting.  We reviewed the letters i and u and introduced two new "upstroke" letters: u and w.

After snack and a movement break, we headed off to room 79 to begin our Social Studies Inquiry work.  We have a federal election coming up soon and the grade 3/4 classes are participating in the Student vote program.  We will be learning about democracy and the process of choosing a leader.  Today we worked on a Survivor Island activity where we worked in small groups to answer some challenging questions.  We learned how difficult it can be to work together and make decisions!!
Please encourage your child by asking questions and sharing appropriate information about what is happening in the election in the Cranston area federal riding!

Our afternoon was not run of the mill.  That is an idiom because we didn't actually run around the mill  :)  We did start off with music.  We moved into math and looked at stretching our thinking with our related facts also known as fact families.  We looked at the numbers 9 and 5 - what could the next number be?

9 + 5 = 13          5 + 9 = 13        9 - 4 = 5      9 - 5 = 4

Students then had to write a challenging related fact for a friend in the classroom  We had many great challenges.

We continued  our work on our Alberta Oil Sands word search.

We had a Terry Fox Assembly. We talked about who Terry Fox was.  We also looked at our goal of running across Canada to finish what Terry Fox had started 35 years ago.  We invite parents to come in and see how far across Canada we have gone.
