Happy International Peace Day!

Today is a special day around the world and at Cranston School!  As Peace Education is one of the main pillars of our school, we celebrate this day in a BIG way!  Each of the students created a Pinwheel for Peace which is adorned by our messages and images promoting peace.  At 10:30, all classes took their pinwheels outside onto the compound to create a giant peace sign.  We had our photo taken and sang some of our school's songs of peace together.  Afterward, Rooms 79 and 80 took a group picture together!

Here is the video we watched and discussed today!

We had a special guest reader in our classes today!  Mr. Southworth come in to read the book
What If . . .?  It talked to the idea f endless possibilities if we only dream and take action!  We took some time to discuss the book and to come up with some What if's of our own.  Work on Writing time today was spent listing our ideas into our notebooks!  Here are a few of the ideas they came up with:

What if none felt alone and they were loved?
What if every person was free?
What if there were no diseases like cancer in the world?
What if nobody was judged by the way they looked?
What if people across the world had more love than they do now?
What if joy spread around the world?
What if none was ever left out?

We will be carrying these ideas forward into our "If . . . " Inquiry in the months to come!

We had our first fire drill of the year today.  Our class set an excellent example for the others in our Village by following directions and exiting the school without a peep!  We were very proud of our students and know that they can be counted on in an emergency.

As Nicholas B. said, "Why do the days go so fast?"  WE agree,  holy cow the days seem to zoom by!
In math, we looked at Fact Families also know as "Related Facts."  We learned that if we know three facts we can easily find the fourth fact as addition facts and subtraction facts are related.

If we know that  6+8 = 14  then we know that  14 - 6 = 8.  Sometimes we may have to think....

6  +  ?  = 14

Tomorrow we will S-T-R-E-T-C-H our thinking to apply this strategy.

In our Science Inquiry, we continued looking at Alberta's Oil Sands and what we know. We shared the facts that people had added to our blog.  Those students who answered the blog got a prize today. Hopefully we can encourage more to read the blog.  We also started a word search about the oil sands.  We looked at some of the prehistoric plants and animals that helped form the oil sands.

Did you know that most of Northern Alberta was under water?  It was also quite tropical at times.  Also, that the formation of the Rocky Mountains helped create the pressure that helped make oil sands.  From our research we are getting closer to answering our inquiry question.

Gym was hard work but fun today. Our focus was on cooperation and working together.  Mrs. Bowles says that it is important for our hearts, lungs and brains to keep moving all of the time and boy does she mean it!  We started out moving around the gym. We then played a fun tag game called Pac Man Tag.  Then Mrs. Bowles really went crazy - we were racecars on a racetrack. Here we used the scooters - one person was the rider and one person was the driver.  We got really good at it and we also learned how to watch out and how to be safe when driving a scooter.

Next we learned a  Dragon Tail tag. This was lots of fun and we had to really work together!  Finally, Mrs. Bowles worked on our running stamina.  We had to run for 2 minutes. We talked about starting out slow and pacing ourselves.  We did it!!  She was so proud of us!

Things to Remember:
1.)  All forms and money due.
2.) Fun Lunch - Subway - September 23
3.) Read the Blog
4.) Running Club on Tuesday at lunch - NO RUNNING CLUB THURSDAY
