Thursday, September 3, 2015 - Third Day Done...

Today was a great day despite the deluge at 3:00!

We began by thinking, talking, drawing and writing about how we are settling in to our new classroom and how we are feeling about our learning community.  We compared this to the feelings we had the day before school started.  Many of us are feeling calmer and more comfortable.  We all know now that if we "Just breathe!" our jitters will disappear and we can all have a great day at school.

We have all had a chance to begin to explore our classroom library and have chosen a book or two for our literacy bins.  We had a short lesson on 3 Ways to Read a Book (although we only got through 2 today!).  Mrs. Zwack read The Principal's New Clothes, first by just reading the pictures and then by reading the words.  It was an entertaining story and we all laughed when we saw the usualy well dressed principal standing in only his underwear!!

We had a delicious snack of a muffin and a cheese string this morning which was a Welcome Back treat from Parent Council.  Thank you to the parents!  We all really enjoyed it.

Next we played a game where we learned about why it is important to pay attention and focus on what we are doing!  It is very difficult to do more than one thing at a time and do them both well. That is why adults are not allowed to text and drive at the same time!  Kartik let us know that this was called Distracted Driving so we decided we would not have Distracted Learning in room 80.  In order to learn we need to focus on our job and give it 100% of our attention!

Our afternoon passed like a whirlwind!  We started with looking at the importance of knowing our math facts.  We were introduced to "Math With Someone."  Today we learned to play three addition fact games that will help us practice our addition facts to 18.  Please take some time to teach your parents these games.

The three games that we learned were:
1.)  Addition War - we take all of the 10's, J's, Q's, and Kings out of the deck - we divide the cards into two groups.  Each person lays down two cards and the person with the highest total wins the cards.
2.) Addition Snap - Take the same cards out of the deck - divide the cards into equal groups for each person - on the count of three - lay down a card. First person to say the correct addition answer wins both of the cards.
3.) Doubles - take the same cards out of the deck.  Leave the pile in the centre - turn over the top card. The first to first give the double answer wins the card.

During our afternoon Nutrition Break we began the book No Talking by Andrew Clements.  The book is based on a boy who was doing a project on Gandhi.  He learned that Ghandi would not talk for one full day each week to help clear his mind.  I bet you can predict what this book may be about.

Due to the Entertainment Book assembly we unfortunately did not have gym with Mr. McDougall. We had a short play time on the playground before going to the assembly.  We ended the day with handing out our Entertainment Books and cleaning up the classroom.

Things to Remember:
1.) Entertainment Books went home today - please send payment back when it is sold.  If you cannot sell the book, please send the book back in the condition it went home in.
2.) All school forms have been sent home.

3.)  Tomorrow we will be outside for a community walk to the windmill.  Please dress for the weather.  We will be going out rain or shine.

Question of the Day:
Make a prediction about what our book  No Talking  will be about. Explain why you think the way that you do. Explain your thinking...

I think the book will be about no talking and being quiet and if it really gave the mind a break.
