Welcome back to everyone after the chilly and wet long weekend.
This morning we started with a quick read aloud of the book Accept and Value Each Person. This book fits in with our talks about how we are each unique and have similarities and differences with our peers. We followed up by interviewing someone in our class that we did not know well. As we worked through the questions, we looked for 3 ways we were the same and 3 ways we were different from one another. We will share this work tomorrow morning!
Our Daily 5 lesson today focused on Read to Self. We created an anchor chart to show what is expected during this time in Daily 5. Then we had one student model the correct way to Read to Self and another showed us what it DOES NOT look like! We gave it a try for 3 minutes and most of us were able to stay on task for the whole 3 minutes. We will be building our reading stamina over the coming weeks so that everyone can be successful.
We began our Mind Up work today with a discussion about the human brain. Each student completed a sketch of what they think their brain looks like and then brainstormed ideas about what our brains do for us. Throughout the year we will be building our understanding of our brains and how we learn.
We continued on with our Read Aloud of Edward Tulane today during snack time and then went out for a body break to build our running stamina for the upcoming Terry Fox run. Please remember to send your child in appropriate footwear and a warm jacket as we will be going outside often throughout the month of September.
When we returned inside, we finished up our illustrations of Edward Tulane and brainstormed words to describe his character at the beginning of the story. This novel is about how his character transforms throughout his journey so we will be tracking these changes and the reasons for the changes.
Our afternoon flew by! We went to music with Mrs. Jones. We worked on movement.
In math, we continued our work on strategies for our addition facts. We listed in our math journals the strategies that we find the easiest:
1.) +0 and +1
2.) Plus 10
3.) Doubles
We then learned a game called "Four in a Row." This was a great game that helped us remember our addition facts as well as strategy that help us to win the game.
We had our first gym with Mr. McDougall. We played a game about following directions and using our own space. He kept changing the directions that we had to follow so it got fairly complicated. Finally, we had to have a "fried egg" on our head and not let it fall.
After gym we only have a few minutes before the end of the day. We worked on building our "Read to Self" stamina.
Things to Remember:
1.) Please return all forms:
Instructional Fees
Consent to Publish Student Information and Work
Consent for Specific Media Coverage
Fun Lunch
2.) We have two snacks during the day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. Please send one handed snacks (not ones that need a fork or spoon). These can be eaten during lunch. This helps with keeping our area clean and saves our work.
3.) Entertainment Books - the more we sell the better for our school programs. If you cannot sell your book please return in the condition it was sent home in.
Question of the Day:
What strategy works best for you when trying to figure our addition facts? Why do you think it works best.

+1 helps me the best, because it is easy and quick! ~Bailey
ReplyDelete+9 strategy say you had a 6 + 9 the 6 would be down by one so then it ads a 1 before it so it is 15.
ReplyDelete1+0+ because it's quick and easy Duncan
