This morning we practiced our Read to Self expectations and students are showing us that they have certainly built up their reading stamina! We were unable to access our laptops this morning but will aim to do a practice run with our RazKids tomorrow and Friday.
We are currently reading a new novel called Follow the Elephant by Beryl Young. It is a story about a boy whose father has recently passed away and he goes on a journey to India with his grandmother to find an old penal friend that she has not heard from for 50 years. We are discussing a great deal about emotions and character's motivations as we go on this adventure with them. Currently, our classmate is in India for the month of January. He will be bringing us some pictures to share about his trip and we can show him what we will have learned while he was away! As we read the book we will also be making connections to our If the World Was a Village Inquiry, learning about what life is like for people around the world.
This afternoon we had an amazing time of learning. In math we are revisiting our skills with our basic facts. We looked at the addition strategies we know, what facts come to us easier than others and where we want to be with our facts as we move into adding and subtracting of large numbers. This work will help us in setting a math goal. We will focus our first math goal on basic facts and which facts we know and which we may need to have strategies for to grow our math brains. We discussed how different math facts are easier (usually addition and multiplication) and which are the most difficult (subtraction and division). Tomorrow we will set our goals and have a plan of action, a timeline as well as be able to tell when we have reached our goal.
We continued our work on our Mars Inquiry videos. Today we added the backgrounds. We really can't wait until others can see them as they are so cool! Not only do we know our stuff but adding the detail of the green screen makes them very interesting to view.
