January 12, 2016

Today was a beautiful day!  Lots of energy in the building.

We started out by having a music class with Mrs. Jones in place of our music in the afternoon.  When we returned we worked on our Growth and Fixed mindset pages in our journals.  Next, we worked on our word work and looked for words in our reading books that fit into the categories we are learning.  Please remember to practice your words at home to prepare for the word quizzes on Friday.

After snack and read aloud we went into Mrs. Peterson's class to continue our Inquiry work.  We watched an excellent video called We Are All Connected.  Please ask your child to tell you all about it and how it is guiding our work in Social Studies!

Can you say "where did that day go?"  Mrs. Bowles was eating her lunch all afternoon as it was so busy that she didn't have time to finish her lunch during the lunch hour.

In math, we started our unit on adding and subtracting REALLY BIG NUMBERS.  Mrs. Bowles gave a pre-assessment.  This is where she looks at what we already know so that she knows what to teach us next. We are all different learners and teachers in the class so we will all know a lot by the time we work through our continued work on numbers. This made many of us a little nervous but we talked about how to get rid of our "math whooosh."

We continued reading Wonder.  It is such a good book and we are making lots of connections and it really makes us want to ask questions, predict and make connections.  These are all good comprehension strategies that will help us as we read our own chapter books.

In our science inquiry a lot is beginning to happen.  The group of scientists (botanists, geologists and meteorologists) were looking at water. How can we filter it so that water will be drinkable for our crew.  They will be conducting experiments tomorrow on water filtration.  If you are in this group please look around your house and bring in the some of the following items:
- coffee filters
- plastic cups
- empty plastic 2L bottles with the bottom cut off
- popsicle sticks

The engineering/architectural group was looking at creating our first prototype of the structure that we are planning on building.  We learned about blueprints as well as architectual drawings.  Today we started our drawings. We will continue to work on these next class and from there we will be creating blueprints.

In gym, the students continued their work on floor hockey skills.

After gym we were supposed to work on continuing to add our work to our IRIS but we got sidetracked with our discussions about our Mars inquiry. Boy oh boy are we excited!

How are you feeling about being back in school after the break?  What are you excited about and what gives you a little bit of a whoosh?  Look at this question - how many parts are there to the question?  How many sentences should I read?  What must a sentence have to be a sentence?

  1. I'm feeling pretty good coming back from winter break. I'm excited about getting back on track in school. What I'm kinda getting a little nervous about is if i'm trusting myself in math. There are 2 parts to the second question. You should read 2 sentences. A sentence must have a capital a period and an action or idea.
