Tuesday, May 3

We are all getting very excited for our Annie performance on Thursday!

This morning we worked on our Words Their Way for a while and had fun racing each other i a Speed Sort.  Next, our reading groups met to catch up on some work with Guided Reading.  We are beginning to get more independent and some groups will soon be moving to a Literature Circles format where they will read and complete assigned tasks/roles each week.  Some groups will continue to work closely with Mrs. Zwack to reach their reading goals.

We had a special visit today from a wonderful group of kindergarten student who presented their Reader's Theatre of The Three Little Pigs.  They have been practicing for weeks and were proud to share with our class!  We had just completed our poetry Reader's Theatre with Mr. Demman so it was fun to see how the K kiddos presented theirs.  You can now go onto Iris and see your child's poetry performance!

After snack, reading Pax and a short movement break in the beautiful sunshine, we went to work on our Social Inquiry.  Mrs. Peterson had found some great websites which she shared with us and students got right to work on their investigations.  They are beginning to narrow down their big questions and are discovering some interesting ideas to focus on the the time to come.

Mrs. Bowles really does not have a voice today. It is now a complete whisper. What a break for the students :)

In math, we practiced our division of 2 - digit numbers by one digit.  We first used base ten blocks and then we used our box method.  We are beginning to get the hang of this.  When you use the box strategy we have to remember our subtraction strategies.

We did a quick check up to see how well we know our division strategies.

Because Mrs. Bowles doesn't have a voice we were unable to do our read aloud today. So we used Tumblebooks to look for non-fiction books to assist us with our learning about Mars. We took this time to also learn about how to take notes from video.  Tomorrow we will be continue with this and take our notes and create a paragraph about the planet.

In gym, we continued our work on games. Mrs. Peterson and I continue to look at how each student participates in gym, how they get along with other teammates, if they are following directions and are they able to follow the rules.

Many of our students are in the production of Annie. We missed them in the class today but know that they will be able to come back and we will share what we have done.

Look at the math question below.  Estimate the quotient (the answer) and also see if you could figure out the answer.  Write one sentence that you would remind others to do when they divide. Do you think that there will be a remainder?  What clues tell you that it will or won't
57 ÷ 3

  1. 57 divided by 3 = 19 with no remainder
First, we skip counted by 3s until we reached 57, the number of multiples is the answer (19).

  4. I estimate the answer is 20 I got it by rounding 57 to 60 and then I divided it in to 3 groups .When you divide a number you have to put it into equal groups in this case I would put 75 into 3 equal groups. My clue was to odd numbers can be divided into equal groups. with out a remainder. -ANDREA
