Monday, February 8th

This is a short but busy week at Cranston School!

Today we worked through three rounds of Daily 5 and Mrs. Zwack and Mrs. Peterson worked with small groups to quiz their Words Their Way lists.  It is evident that many students are working on these at home and we appreciate their effort!  We have time during Daily 5 for this in class but the extra review at home makes a world of difference.  There will be no new words this week.  Students will receive their new words following the Family day weekend.

We watched a few short videos on Growth Mindset and talked about how they fit in with our previous work and what new ideas were presented.

Mrs. Kenna and her class came in for French today - this will be our regular routine on Monday mornings from now on.  We learned about a new verb today and how to say it in a number of ways, depending on who was doing the action.  It was pretty tricky and Mrs. Zwack really had to pay close attention!!  We wrapped up with the number game that we learned last week!

The afternoon was full of celebration.  We started off learning about Chinese New Year also known as Lunar New Year.  We watched the following video that explained some of the customs and tradition.

We then did a guided drawing in our Visual Journals for Year of the Monkey. If you would like to practice at home you can go to this link:

We worked with our buddies in Room 51.  We learned how to use chopsticks and then practiced picking up all kinds of items.

The final treat of the day was having the Calgary Tai Chi and Martial Arts College  come to our school and perform the Lion Dance and demonstrate some of their Martial Arts routines.  This was very exciting and we loved to see them.

We must not forget the kindies started off our whole school celebration by singing  "Gung Hay Fat Choy."  They were spectacular!

As you can see we had a very eventful day.  Happy New Year to All!

Things to Remember:
1.)  Wednesday Morning is Carnaval - please dress for the weaather
2.)  Thursday and Friday is Teachers' Convention - No School for Students
3.)  Monday, February 15th is Family Day - No School
